Right machine in the right place

28.2.2019

Tampereen Vera Oy has noticed how choosing the right machine can boost the efficiency of the operations. They carefully optimise the need of equipment individually for each work site, and the utilisation rate of their Lännen multipurpose machines has been very high.

Tampereen Vera Oy, a network cons-truction company, which is a part of Tampereen Sähkölaitos Group, is an excellent example of a customer who makes full use of Lännen multipurpose machines in their day-to-day operations.

Vera actively uses the services of local subcontractors, who own multipurpose machines. They assign them for tasks, which require exactly this type of machines, which excellently support efficient performance of various network building tasks, both in urban and rural environments.

– When choosing machinery for our needs, we emphasize in particular two points. The first priority is the environmental aspect, as it seems to be in focus of discussion these days. The second priority, of course, is the work-power ratio of the equipment. With new machinery both of these ambitious targets can be met. There are fewer downtimes, the machines are more reliable and, for example, oil spills, for which we have zero to-lerance at our work sites, are nowadays less frequent, says Matti-Pekka Falck, Construction Manager of Tampere Vera Oy.

There are lots of sites out there for which any type of machine other than Lännen would be a wrong choice

In search for maximum efficiency

When it comes to utilising the Lännen multipurpose machines – on which grounds do you base your choice of machine for each individual work site?

– Despite its remarkable versatility, not even Lännen suits to every conceivable work site. We examine each prospect case by case and always opt for the best possible equipment for it.

– There are lots of sites out there for which any type of machine other than Lännen would be a wrong choice, Falck says.

– We are striving to deploy our multipurpose machines on sites where their properties can be utilised to the maximum. The typical areas of use can roughly be divided into two categories: urban construction and maintenance of aerial power lines and poles in rural areas. Configuration of the machines varies depending on the task at hand.

This time we are in Tammela, Tampere, at a building site of a 1.2-kilo-metre-long fibre line intended for ca-mera surveillance.

– For this site, for example, there is no other reasonable choice than Lännen. No other type of machine would be able to handle effectively such a demanding contract work involving so much on-site transfers, Falck says.

– The contract includes five street sections to be excavated and during the work the machine has to be mo-ving back and forth all the time. In addition, this project involves a lot of carrying: fences, concrete blocks, cover sand, traffic signs, plate compactors, cables and so on.

Properties with clear competitive edge

The machine working at the site is owned by JTH-Tekniikka from Kangasala. The entrepreneur Jukka Hietanen acquired a new Lännen 8600K Premium machine in the summer, as a successor for his previous Lännen machine, which he had bought second-hand for five years ago.

– I'd say there wasn't really a reasonable alternative for this machine. I think its basic concept is almost perfect. The premium model with its large tyres almost rivals the model 8800 – only the engine and the hydraulic system have slightly less power. But in this business it's rather skill than force that matters – this machine has never fallen short of power not once, Jukka says.

– The best things about this machine are its robustness and speed. Our work sites are located within a radius of about 45 kilometres from Kangasala and compared to a tracked excavator/lorry combination, for example, moving between the work sites goes really fast. I can drive the machine straight from one site to the next, Hietanen says.

– Thanks to the oscillating frame joint, the stability of the machine has improved a lot. Tipping it over is almost impossible, even though I very rarely use the outriggers.

Both Hietanen and Falck agree that the biggest advantage of Lännen machine to the employer is its versatility.

– Even though I can't handle all the tasks alone, I can very well assist as a service machine at larger work sites. Some time ago, we had a large power-line construction site, where Jukka carried out alone the assisting works and finishing after three tracked excavators. Everything went really smoothly and efficiently, says Matti-Pekka Falck.

– Vera is constantly striving to optimise its operations and there will always be a demand for this kind of machine. When used in right places, the Lännen multipurpose machine is a very effective solution, and there is no viable alternative to it among other types of machines, Falck concludes.
